The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual but also most successful Navy aircraft of World War II. Feared by the Japanese enemy, who gave it the nickname Whispering Death, it fought its way through the Pacific skies from 1943 to 1945 and achieved record-breaking successes: 2140 enemy aircraft were destroyed and 189 of its own were lost. The Corsairs concentrated firepower consisted of six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns.
Its characteristic bent wings made it highly recognizable to the ground troops, who called it the Sweetheart of Okinawa. The F4U-1A was the first batch with major changes, with a top speed of 671 km/h.
