The ultimate goal of Go is to control more territory (empty space) than your opponent by surrounding it with your stones.
- The Pieces: One player takes the Black stones and the other takes White.
- Placement: Stones are placed on the intersections of the lines, not inside the squares.
- Movement: Black always plays first. Once a stone is placed, it never moves unless it is captured and removed from the board.
- Liberties: These are the empty intersections directly adjacent (up, down, left, right—not diagonally) to a stone or a connected group of stones.
- Capturing: If you completely occupy all the liberties of an opponent's stone or connected group, that group is captured and removed from the board.
- Suicide Rule: You cannot place a stone on an intersection that has zero liberties, unless that move instantly captures an opponent's stone to open up a new liberty.
- Ending: The game ends when the board is full or when both players agree no more useful moves can be made and choose to pass consecutively.
- Scoring: Players count the empty intersections they have completely enclosed, plus the number of stones they captured. White is usually given a few bonus points (called Komi, usually 6.5 or 7.5) to compensate for Black going first. The player with the highest total score wins.
